What to bring to your braiding appointment (and what to skip)

If you do one thing before your first appointment, make it this: come with clean, detangled hair. Freestyle patterns look their best when we can part cleanly and keep tension even. Avoid heavy greases, thick butters, or a bunch of product buildup right before you come in. It can make the hair slippery and slows the process down.

• Bring 1 to 3 reference photos. A recent visitor told us they showed a picture at check-in and we recreated the look, so we love having that visual.
• Know your non-negotiables: straight backs, curves, zig-zags, or a certain hairline shape. We’ll freestyle, but we still need your direction.
• Skip the blow-dryer right before you arrive if it leaves your scalp sensitive or your hair overly dry. Comfortable scalp first, always.

And if you’re booking for a teen or someone tender-headed, tell us upfront. We braid neat, but comfort matters, and we’d rather adjust early than have you leaving with a sore scalp.

Inside a 120-minute freestyle braiding session: the real play-by-play

When you arrive, we’ll start with a quick consult. You show us your reference photo, we look at your hair length and density, and we agree on the direction before we ever pick up a comb. For men’s freestyle, our listed appointment is 120 minutes, but you should plan for 1.5 to 3 hours depending on how complex the pattern is and how your hair is behaving that day.

Then we part and start building the pattern freehand. This is where “freestyle” actually shows up. We’ll keep checking symmetry, the flow of the design, and how the braids sit when you move your head. Let’s talk comfort. Some scalp tension is normal at the start, especially if you’re not used to braids. Pain is not the goal.
